Warm

If I stare at this picture long enough, I can actually feel the sun.

Blah

Here is my latest post on Drunk Cyclist.

I feel like total shit, have no energy and all I want to do is sleep. I haven't done jack shit all week. I took 3 days off the bike.

I coughed up some nasty shit this morning that made me puke bright yellow bile and I still got on that fucking trainer and rode for 80 minutes. A Coach Troy time trial DVD.

Ugh.

Seriously, I am so sick of the cold and I am sick of winter. It's 24 outside right now. March is next week. Can we please speed up spring a little? At least the latest winter storm is not headed here. Good luck east coasters.

What is worse in your opinion? Training for a marathon in the snow and ice, or training for a long ride indoors? I'm going to have to go with the later. I'll be so happy when I can ride outside everyday. And not fucking freeze to death.

I really miss swimming and running.
But I love my bikes.

*** Updated - oh fuck, they just said 3-6 inches of snow for us tonight.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Riding for Rescue

Over the last few years I have ran the Flying Pig marathon for Dobe rescue. Raising money for Northcoast Doberman Rescue is important to me. This year I am doing a 12 hour bike race on May 1st, called Calvin's Challenge instead of the marathon. I hope to raise more than last year's amount ($1364.00) and ride my bike 175 miles.

In 2009, NCDR rescued and placed 85 dogs in new homes. Since 2006, Teka Clark and Judi Pirozzoli, who are the HEART and SOUL of NCDR, have placed 285 dogs in new homes. Often, they take in the worst dogs - sick dogs, starved and beaten dogs, dogs that have to have limbs removed, and the list goes on.

Help me help dogs like Lady. She's a senior girl, 12 years old.

Snowmageddon "CX Race"

It was nothing more than a run in the snow with my bike and getting hit with snowballs by ruthless little kids. One guy got hit in the balls and went down. It was all in good fun. Nice to see lots of people again.

We met a few SS hipsters and I rode a bad add SS 9'er with BIG fat tires and fenders and fell in love. I want one. Yes. One day. An SS 9'er. You were right Julie.

We even made the news
. A lady stuck a mic in my face and I started babbling like an idiot. Later I was on Channel 5. I can't seem to find the video for it though. More pictures here from Cincinnati.com.

Frosty 14 Trail Race

Today was a great day. It was really fun to see everyone and get out in the snow and do some running. They had the trails packed down pretty good so conditions weren't too bad.

We lined up, they blew the whistle and off we go. The first half mile was the worst but once we got into the trails it wasn't too bad.

I was sloooow. I knew I would be. I've only been running once a week since the IM (6 months!) To be able to pull a 14 mile trail run out of my ass makes me happy. It says a little something for my endurance and fitness. Seriously, the last long run I did was 10 miles and that was over 3 weeks ago.

Anyways......

The trails had some serious sliding downhills and some big climbs. My Yak Trax didn't hold up as well as I thought they would but they got me through some rough parts. I saw lots of people skidding and falling in some parts.

The course was an out and back so it started sucking really bad when the fast guys were on the turn around and we were all trying to run on snowy single track. Those guys don't stop either. Some slammed right into me. Some were nice and stepped to the side.

I always end up with 50 year old men around me in races. I was thinking about that a lot today. It happens in triathlon too. I pretty much followed a big guy in orange pants the whole race. Once we got to the turn around I was pretty pumped up and I passed him on the 2nd half.

I sang along to my MP3 pretty loudly those last 6 miles. Lots of JayZ and Snoop - inappropriate language. I wonder what those men were thinking.

Then I was passing a sign that said 1.7 miles to the Visitors Center and I was almost done. Sandi met me and I ran across the finish line in: 3:24. Got 3rd in my a/g. *This is a small race!

Last year I finished in 2:47 and 3rd a/g too.

Sorta tells ya what the conditions were like.

After the race we all drove to Wheelie Fun, the big triathlete store up near where we were racing. They were having their BIG annual sale. As soon as I walked in I saw Amanda (she skipped the race to run 17 solo miles in some crazy fast time). It seemed every triathlete in the city was there. It was so much fun to catch up with Holly and see people I haven't seen since IMKY. I spent an hour there socializing instead of shopping.

All in all a great day. Life is good. I love what sun, fresh air and a little snowy run can do for my head!

Snow days

This is my friend Susans' gallery. She had her old school MTB that was parked in front of this wall piece. Another BMX bike was up against the wall. I thought it'd be a cool picture.

I used to be into photography when I was still getting high. I liked taking pictures of crashed cars and broken windows and stuff. We'd sneak in abandoned warehouses and take pictures. Nowadays I like taking pictures of bikes. Any bike. When I race, Dominic also goes around taking pictures of cool bikes too (and tri-geeks).

Monday has been my long ride day these last few weeks. I rode rollers for 3 hours yesterday and got in 61 miles. It was an awesome workout! I haven't made it past 2 hours on the rollers, so to make it for 3 and get in that many miles felt really good. I was starving about 2 hours into it so I hopped off, had a protein shake and grabbed some coconut water. That got me through the last hour. Plus a little KRS-One.

But damn, I need a tan so bad.

And finally, Dominic was snowed in for 2 days and he did pretty much nothing except build this!!

We have almost 2 feet of snow outside so I can't get a good picture right now. The lighting sucks too. The bike is painted a candied red, hot pink, and purple. It shines different colors in different lighting. It's so kick ass. It's all old school, except for the converted stem and the front v-brake. We ended up spending a total of $150.00 because I needed a nice MTB saddle. I plan on doing some endurance events on this baby. Who knows? Maybe we'll make it an SS.

P.S. Ya'll remember bikesgonewild? BGW? He's taking his writing to another level and laying off the blogs. I think a couple people asked me about him, so I thought I'd let ya know.

Valentine's Day @ Ikea

I've always wanted a nice bed. I haven't had a real bed with a frame since I was in HS. And even then I slept on a mattress in the basement, you know what I mean?

I bought a nice set of king mattresses back in 2000. But no frame. So basically I've been sleeping on a mattress, on the floor, all this time. I finally decided that this year, I was going to buy a new bed with my tax money (instead of bike stuff). Especially After Ari chewed a huge hole in the mattress last fall and we had to flip it and throw a down pillow topper on top.

I COULD NOT wait to get rid of those mattresses.

You all are probably like "WTF".

But see, I don't care much about my house decor. I was just happy to even BUY a house in 2002. It's a tiny house with a backyard and that's it. That's all we need. We're easy. And simple. I don't worry about having matching canisters in my kitchen, or gorgeous art on the walls. As long as it's clean and neat, I'm cool.

W went to Ikea. It's about a half hour away. It was a madhouse. If you've ever been to one, you know how it is. Plus today was Valentine's Day. We had a plan. Go upstairs, pick out frame and mattress. Eat, of course, at the Ikea restaurant. Head downstairs and tweak out on textiles, kitchen stuff and rugs.

We got the bed and mattress picked out quick. In textiles, we grabbed a bunch of stuff, new sheets, pillow cases, duvet cover and all that shit.

Got some new stuff for the kitchen, all mismatched stuff. Green bowls, purple plates, different color coffee cups, green silverware.

And a new rug for Lucy so she doesn't slide in the livingroom.

So we head to the check out. Mob scene. Finally paying for our stuff, the cashier directs us over to a pick up area where my bed will be, since it's king-sized, she told me. Dominic goes to get the car. His nephew was supposed to meet us there with his truck but he was having car trouble. A half hour later they bring my stuff out, I drag it out to the car. Dominic proceeds to throw the mattress and frame on top of our Scion. He ties it to the roof of the car with this skinny cheap ass twine and all the while people are walking by, snickering. Fuck them. No, we don't drive a big ass truck or SUV.

We get home and start the fun stuff. Pitched the old mattresses and Dominic started building the bed. About an hour into it, he tells me we're missing a part. Plus 4 screws. Oh, and the duvet cover he picked out? Wrong size.

It's 7pm. I get back in the car and drive back to Ikea. There's a line at the exchange counter. They're closing in 25 minutes. I ended up running through the store to first pick out the right size duvet cover, then back to the exchange counter where he also gave me the 4 screws that were missing from our parts. I got home, and within 15 minutes we had this:

Green walls. I'm loving lime green. My CX bike is going to be painted lime green, I think.

Here is Lucy's new rug.

Hope you had a good Valentine's Day too.

I'm over the weather....

Yesterday I woke up to about 5 more inches of snow. I don't even give a shit anymore. I put my Yak Trax on my trail shoes and headed out. The streets weren't too bad so I ran in the road. The cars were totally unforgiving and the sidewalks had drifts 3 feet high.

Sandi had texted me that the winds were whipping around and it was -5 with the windchill. I was running into a headwind for about 3 miles. My face hurt and I was cussing myself for being so dumb. Once I turned away from the wind it got a lot easier. I ran an additional 1.5 when I got back to my house for a total of 9 miles.

One of my oldest and dearest friends is in town. We have been friends since 1983 when I was in the 8th grade and she was in the 9th. Our history is hilarious. She lives in Chicago and does stand up comedy (Second City) now. We had a few hours to hang out yesterday. We had lunch and then went for coffee in Clifton.

We ran into another girl we have known for years, and we all ended up having coffee together. It was nice. Laughing about shit that happened 20 years ago. Talking about people on Facebook and who is doing what now (we know one girl who lives in Oregon and grows medical cannabis for a living - legally!) Later, we ran into another guy (Charlie C, it was Keven D.) who used to be real fucked up, still kinna is fucked up, but in a different way. It's like that in Clifton. You hang out for a couple hours and you're bound to see someone you know.

Life is a trip, right?

Monday's Updates

* Thanks for your comments on Lucy. She's much better. Not quite 100% but she's not screaming anymore. Her spine is still a little roached (curved) so she's not going on any walks yet. It sucks so bad leaving her home, but it's gotta be done.

* Drunk Cyclist is a trip. Some days the comments are so wrong. Downright mean. I have to stand up for myself a lot and I don't like it much. I'm supposed to "take it with a grain of salt", per Big Jonny. Whatthefuckever. I guess I knew all of this shit going into it. Still, being the only female contributor can be a tad intimidating. They want me to stand up for myself and talk shit back. So I do. I'm doing an ok job so far, but it's exhausting.

* One more clear coat and my MTB will be ready to build. The frame is pink w/ black flames. The fork is black with pink flames. It's kick ass.

* We watched Whip It last night. That movie was awesome. I loved Juliette Lewis' character. Roller Derby looks rad. Imagine being able to just throw a bitch down. It would feel so good! I bet I'd get my ass kicked too. It looks painful as shit. I still want to check out a Cincinnati Rollergirls practice sometime. I don't think I can commit to it this year but who knows what's in store for next year. HA! Plus the outfits are killer.

* I watched Celebrity Rehab today during my 3 hour trainer ride. OMG. Heidi Fleiss and Tom Sizemore. Wow. Heroin is a motherfucker. Heidi's mouth looks ridiculous. I want to know what pills they give them while they're detoxing.

* I hooked up with another old friend of mine from wayyyyy back in the day (we go back 25+ years). She was a hard core junkie till about 3 years ago. Maybe 4 now. The fact that she made it out is a miracle. Cool girl. She wants to be a Roller Derby girl too. She posted this picture of me on Facebook last night. Pulling big bong hits, back in 1989 or so.

Kenda updates:

New Thompson stem and seatpost are on the road bike. Dominic was impressed with the quality. I can't tell any difference really. New tires will be shipped soon too. They come in colors.

The skinsuit came. I have to suck it all in, but all in all, it fits pretty good. This is a female's L. The director said if I had a short torso to go with the L.

The team thing has been on my mind a lot. So far my only advantages are my sponsors. They are very good to us. I think it's going to be cool to represent this women's cycling team in 2010. But I've already decided that in 2011, I will be back to racing CX in my Batman thermal. That's who I am. This team thing is really just not for me. With that being said, I still plan to show up and give it all I have.

*** Amanda I am sorry.

Lucy's hurt

Lucy is going to the vet tomorrow (my vet is open on Sundays). She's been in pain since she ran in the woods with me on Wednesday. She woke up the next day and screamed in pain. She wants to stay in a sit position, on the couch, on the bed, in her crate. Sometimes I can get her into a laying down position. Then we cover her up and let her sleep. Last night she actually stayed awake all night, in that sit position on the couch, from 2am, till 8am.

When she does stand, she keeps her spine curved. It looks like it could be Wobblers. I am pretty sure, whatever it is, it's some kind of degenerative spine disease. She's displayed bouts of pain like this before. When she first came into rescue at 3.5 years old, she would scream and bite at her hips. They did xrays which showed arthritis. Her vitamin and diet regimen helped and she stopped screaming and biting at her hips.

I have always dreaded the day she couldn't come on walks with me and the boys, Ari and Fausto. She loves to walk with her pack, especially in the woods. Today when I had to leave her home to walk the boys, I baby-gated her in the bedroom. When I came back, I could hear her wooooo-woooooing from outside. It actually sounded like boooo-hooooo. Poor baby girl.

She's 9.5 years old. Dobermans who make it over the age of 10 get an award from the DPCA. Most do not make it. I always thought Lucy would be my Dobe that lived to be 14.

If you give a little bit of a shit, say a prayer for her.

This week in pictures - February edition!

Busy, busy week.

Dominic's been working on my bike. He's about to start the lettering. He is making his own stencils. The frame is going to be crazy. Wait and see.

Horrible disgusting picture of me on a trainer ride. Note the bikes in my livingroom. Nice decor, right?

My boys. BFF's for life. Who would have ever thought a male Doberman and a male Pit Bull would get along so well. They love each other so much.

Sunday, we rode fixed. I got in 31 miles or so. It's amazing what a little sun can do for my mood.

Sandi and I went skiing again. I suck at it. I was on my ass a lot. It's all about form, and mine sucks ass. Sandi said I looked like I was taking a shit, instead of leaning forward and pressing my shins against my boots like the instructor kept telling me to do.

I still had fun. Ryan is awesome for getting us in for free, since he teaches there! Holla!

It looks colder than it was. This was my long ride day. I got in 58 miles, all by my lonesome.

Dominic's going to ride for Kenda. Kidding, of course, but doesn't he look handsome in the kit? Now we can match and he's excited. My skinsuit came too, but I haven't had a chance to even try it on yet. It's pretty bad ass looking though.

I need yoga bad.
