The shitstorm

Last weekend, I started a big shitstorm here in my tiny little cycling community. After the post below about this shitty crit I attempted to do, I sent an email to a USAC rep and cc'd the race promoter requesting a women's "C" race.

Here is what I sent:

You'd think that the Ault Park Series of crit races would show some interest in developing new cyclists and broadening our cycling community, but year after year, the series has locked women out. Instead, the promoter, __________, has told women they can pay the same as the men to race with the men, but most women who show up have the same experience-- shelling our out $15 just to get dropped in a lap or two. Not only does this guarantee low (if any) female turnout, it also makes women who show up feel pretty bad about our cycling abilities. As long as this is the set-up, women's turnout won't increase, and Mr. _______ can say "women don't show up, why should we give them their own race?"

USAC needs to stop permitting races that don't treat women equally. It's bad for the sport.

Sincerely,

Judi Rothenberg

The club that puts on the series found out about my email and on Saturday morning I woke up to about 15 emails from 3-5 of their board members. Nasty attacks..... I am only naming one guy who was the worst of all of them.

"Judy what you did was wrong, cowardly, self centered and unsubstantiated. You have no idea about cycling and or tradition" Rick Hoeting".

"You have a lot of audacity asking USAC to shut down an event because it doesn't meet YOUR criteria for the type of racing it should provide."

"I’ve been bicycle racing since 1972, and I have encountered every type of volunteer and for-profit promoter imaginable. To attack the integrity of ___________, who VOLUNTEERS hours of his time to promote Ault Park, is shameful. Get involved, volunteer."

"I view her as hostile to the club and cycling in general. Until her attitude changes she has no business at any meetings. Last time I checked obama doesn't meet with bin laden to lay out future plans."
(Rick Hoeting)

"not all women get dropped, just the ones who need to train more." (Rick Hoeting)

"You are a freaking moron and if I was you I would quit before you run out of appendages to put into your mouth."
(Rick Hoeting)

"You’ve got a lot of nerve banging on someone who volunteers their time to promote an event which benefits the Cincinnati racing community so tremendously. How much time did you spend in 2009 volunteering at cycling events?"

By Saturday morning I was in tears and had to work all day. I kept on reciveing more and more nasty emails (right now there are about 95 emails total that have been sent in the last 4 days).

Out of all those girls I raced with, ONE girl had my back. Christa. She and Julie helped me write a reply (it's long so I am just posting parts....)

As a female athlete and a beginner at bike racing, I can tell you that getting involved in the sport on a competitive level, especially as an adult, is not easy. It is intimidating and often discouraging to get to a race and often be one of only a small handful of women showing up amongst dozens if not hundreds of men. For many women, this makes it discouraging enough not to show up a second or third time. Hence, competing in an event like AP crit, where there are not only a small showing of females, but also the knowledge that you will be competing against CAT 4 men, is frustrating and makes it not as enjoyable an experience. You say not enough women show up. Of course women aren't going to show up and pay $ to get dropped from the men's race.

I know the your BOD has been approached by your own female team members about these issues and didn't get much of a response in return, that's why I turned for outside help. .....Do you think it's fair for women to pay the same and put in the same training and effort to race a field they can't compete in?

Women's bike racing has exploded in our area in the last few years. There were 33 women that lined up at Vandervorts. Wouldn't it be great it we could get even just half that to show up for their own race at Ault Park? Make it 15 laps? Let the juniors ride with us! I understand Ault Park races have been going on for 27 years. The change for a C race could be nothing more than a huge positive for everyone involved.

I just started bike racing last fall in CX. I helped Dave the following month with set up for a couple CX races. This spring I helped with registration at 4 of the spring race series. I also volunteered FOR YOUR CLUB at the Cleve's TT a few weeks back. I have offered up time to help with Maderia and Dave's master RR next weekend. I DO volunteer. You must have spelled my name wrong when you looked it up. It's Rothenberg, not Rothenburg.

I received more emails from the rest of the board, trying to apologize for Rick Hoeting's hateful comments that had me in tears Sat and Sun.

"I apologize for the comments made by Rick Hoeting. I do NOT agree with the tone, and much if any of the content, of his most recent comments, or those he made earlier. As for the comments I made to you in a private email concerning your volunteering capacities, I apologize. Clearly you have been involved in helping with local events. Thank you."

"Don't apologize for me and trust me the tone is only a fraction of how pissed I am. I am not sure why you guys keep entertaining her babble."
(Rick Hoeting)

Monday I woke up to an email from the director of my team. Rick Hoeting wrote an email to my director, trying to get me kicked off Kenda:

" Judi Rothenburg is a serious detriment to the image your team portrays. You might want to seriously consider terminating your association with her or at least require some type of formal apology to the promoter and the hosting club.....
For your own records....I have checked Judi’s performances personally and find that she gets dropped from her own categories as well. I think the problem isn’t that the competition is too fast but Judi is just too slow." (Rick Hoeting)

Reply from my director (again, long, so I am just posting the best parts. He backed me 100%.

"
Accusing Judi of under-training is just short of bull hockey and it is very discriminatory against women. I will not honor your concern of that, as I know many women of your local OH teams, which I graciously will not name, would greatly appreciate what Judi is asking for....Your suggestion to ban her is way out there and beyond your position within USA Cycling. There is no need to threaten Judi, and don't assert any threat towards our team.....This whole thing is way out of control. Maybe everyone needs to go back and re-read Judi's original email. Judi simply requested a women's race, and she was personally attacked from that point on."

They wanted Christa and I to come to the race tonight. The race promoter asked us out to eat after the race to discuss the entire thing. My plan was to go all day. Then I sent a note asking which place to meet at, and the promoter got shitty with me again.

"Come early so we can discuss how to increase your lap count".

Ummm. I don't need a coach thanks. I just responded back that I had to go to Home Depot because my ceiling is falling in and I need a new roof. I needed a time/place. He says:

"I have a skid of shingles in my garage you can have if you race tonight".

WHAT???? BRIBE ME MOTHER FUCKER??? So you and your rich Hyde Park buddies can sit back and laugh again when I bust a lung trying to make it around 2 laps? Humiliate myself? Really?

Plus you know I NEED those fucking shingles. And I don't have any money to buy shingles for a new roof. And he knew that and tried to dangle something in front of my face just so he could get his kicks watching me suck.

So the tears start flowing and I just can't do it anymore. I called Christa and told her I was done. I am tired. I want to stop being told I suck.

I may have to quit racing and just go have fun and ride my bikes. I'm seriously thinking about it. Cuz all of the sudden, this isn't fun anymore and my confidence is destroyed.

If Rick Hoeting is sending you nasty email messages, emailing your team trying to get you kicked off, and being a general douche bag, he has shown himself to be nothing more than a cowardly piece of shit. No team should ever welcome his services in any capacity- rider, volunteer or board member. He is the black eye on cycling. You were just trying to do right.

You have also learned a lesson. When you make the principled and correct stance to try and make a change, frequently the people you are trying to help will not have your back. If the other female racers are willing to be second class citizens, allow promoters to give them crappy races at bad times and toss them in with other groups, maybe they deserve just that. You don't, but maybe they do.

So did this douche bag have the guts to come say these nasty things to you in person, like when Dominic was there? I didn't think so. Keyboard commando is real brave sending nasty email messages to a girl. So impressive!

And Judy, just come back to triathlon. You know we love you! And remember... you are an Ironman!

Trihardist said...

That's total bullshit. I can't believe these assholes you're dealing with. Just stick with CX and triathlon; you don't get many of these kinds of bastards in either of those fields.

Fuck 'em, Judy; you don't need them. Hope he has fun with all the other man-children in tight pants around him, because that's all they'll ever have at their suck-ass races.

Hi Judy
Found this post through Zen.
It's got to be fun.
Not fun.
Not done.
That does not mean don't not race, but make it what you want it to be.
This is not your issue.
It is the 'said' someone elses.
Mirror time is needed.
Go well.
Keep rolling.

Judy,

I'm pissed just reading this and I don't even know anybody.

Don't let some dumbass snobs stop you from racing. You are what racing is all about. Someone going out and trying to make themselves better. People like you are what make cycling great. Those people have never and probably couldn't have overcome the things you have in your life. FUCK THEM. If that's the way people are going to act at the crits I agree don't do it. Focus on the races you love and you know you are going to get treated with respect like everyone deserves.

I hope you get to some mtb races. MTB racers aren't near as stuck up.

Rick Hoeting sounds a right prick - run him over someone please.

Living in the UK Judy means I am unlikely to ever meet you, but I love reading your blog. You're a gutsy lady and remind me sometimes of things I have said and done in the past and the pastings I received because of them.

At times I felt utterly defeated and wanted to hide in a corner, but something inside would not allow me to be beaten.

You seem to have a lot of admirers and supporters out there - use them to help you start your own races and then you can tell dickhead to shove it!

Don't give up!

Total dick! I hope he reads this, all of it. You know who this guy is...he's the one in grade school that would aim a bottle rocket right at you and run or punch and run. Yep, coward, douchebag, prick. I actually like that he showed his hand and put it in writing. Can't pull the - she didn't understand what I was saying trick. Yep, this is why my road racing career lasted one race (that and the girls were sandbaggers and wouldn't cat up;)!

Judi,

I've started a shit storm or two in my time as well. The Rick guy just sounds douchey or that he is trying to defend what is tradition to him. you took a stand don't back down. Sounds like the promoter wants to work with you, he wants to pull you into the fold and have an audience with you. I don't think he's trying to bribe you, but he also realizes that it'll be tough for you to go back out there, he doesn't want to lose you. the Rick guy sounds like he's pushing back at your team to try and even up you going to usac. Again douchey move. You made a principled stand, don't back down, meet with the promoter. Maybe he says, if you get 10 women, we'll have a class.. maybe he'll have some history that you don't know about. In the end, it's good to connect with him. If he's promoting a race, giving back to the sport he has to be a pretty good guy on some level. There's a lot of vampires in this sport, very few promote anything.. Be vigilant, here the guy out. Most of all, keep racing, if you quit the douchey rick guy wins.

Judy,

Unfortunately, it is the same all over the country. There just are not enough women cycling racers to fill up fields. Race directors often take a hit trying to accomadate women racers. On the flip side, in triathlon there are women only races which is probably not fair to the men. If you are getting dropped from your own races you should probably just keep doing cat 4 races until you can hang and then try racing with the men. Or take the bull by the horn and put on your own womens only training series.

Mary IronMatron said...

What a prick! Don't let an asshole like that drive you from the sport. It's painful to try and effect change. Kudos to you for making the effort, and I'm sorry you got such incredible shit for it. On the upside, look how much the director of your team likes and respects you! That is good...

Chloe said...

I want to punch Rick in his face. And then stomp on this bike. Who the hell is he? God? I hope that everytime he rides, he gets a flat. On both tires. Come back to triathlon - we will welcome you with open arms! :)

cdnhollywood said...

Rick needs to drop the EPO - he's getting too cranky from it.

Judi - if you're not having fun, then certainly don't do it. But in saying that, don't let these guys push you around. Your email was well worded and legit. Rick's a prick and is afraid of change. Rather than include the world into "his" wonderful sport, he'll close everyone off so he can be a big fish in a small pond.

It's tactics like these that have kept women and other sub-A racers from the crits. Rick likes it that way.

I say burst his bubble. Make waves. Throw shit into the fan and let it fucking rain. Change isn't always easy, but it's needed to progress.

And if that doesn't work, I hear a bag of oranges in a pillowcase won't bruise. :D

Wait a minute, this douche has been around forever and he is still racing Cat 4? Seriously, and this Cat 4 is going off about cycling tradition? Maybe he needs a little more time in the saddle. Of course those racing with him may feel otherwise. Mr. Red Helmet.

Of course if Mr Cat 4 was pushed into the 1/2 races every time he showed up to a race, and was able not to wreck, he might understand what some of the 4/5 women go through every time they show up for a race.

Wow, Judi, wow... Good for you for standing up. What you asked for is reasonable and his personal attacks were shameful and cowardly. For him to e-mail your team to get you kicked off? How low. My mouth dropped open when I read that. The fact that your team stood up for you says that you shouldn't quit this sport. If you love it, keep doing it and don't let this jerk push you around.

I respect you for having the balls to stand up to this guy. Best of luck dealing with this. I hope you are able to meet with the promoter.

Hey Lady,
Sorry, I've been demonstrating the possible downfalls of business travel for the last two days, and just saw this.

Look.

This is no different than when people don't like my actions and call me fat. Happens all the time. "Hey, douche, why'd you cut me off in your SUV?" "Shuttup, fatso." See, people don't like being wrong. So they find some dumb justification for why they're better than (in their mind) and it makes it ok. It doesn't matter what it is, it's just what dumbasses do.

So, don't let this get you down. They're not really calling you slow- they're just finding some excuse for their idiocy. Take heart.

Shitstorm is right. Unfortunately, there is always "one" of those people in whatever sport you are a part of. The elitist, who believes that they somehow are "all that", to coin a phrase. Even if they are, it doesn't serve as an excuse to make the experience shitty for others, as Rick has for you.

I agree completely with gttim's first comment, Rick has proven himself to be a first rate prick and the fact that your fellow female cyclists didn't have your back is just inexcusable. No change can ever be effected if you don't have a collective voice.

Bravo to you for being brave enough to ask the question and trying to make that change. It will be tough, but don't let them drive you from the sport if you love it, stick it out if you can. My guess is they will have a newfound respect for you in the end. If they don't, fuck 'em, they don't own the roads.

Huge Kudos for your team director for standing up for you. That alone speaks volumes about his respect for you.

For every nasty comment Rick Hoeting said towards you, be assured there are countless that would have plenty to say back to him in your defense.
Thankfully your team director, and more people than you realize, have your back.
That guy obviously has an egotistical view of racing and as a fellow female racer, I am sickened by the mentality that individual has shown.
Hold your head high, keep fighting and don't let that piece of work take away any of your confidence and strength that you have. Rick Hoeting is an embarrassment to the sport of cycling.

jcorreia said...

Whatever you do don't quit. And I know you won't. It's a though sport but you do see improvements if you stick to it and I'm sure in a year's time you'll be looking back and amazed at how much your fitness has improved. And your idea of ever promoter having to add a female category is brilliant. Makes sense to me. Good luck at your next race.

Anonymous said...

I've only read your blog a few times but I know this much about you; You've overcome a hell of a lot more than this! Don't give them the satisfaction nor you the regret of quitting!

Rica said...

I agree with Joao. Don't quit. Accept the shingles (why the hell not? Especially if they won't let you race in a manner where you can win the cash prizes. ;) ), meet with the promoter and further defend your stance for a female category! EFTA has female categories for their races (well, except in my class, but that's ok - it's so small, and this class is so relatively knew, it's not surprising. Besides, I'm the only woman in my class, understandably. ;) ) ANYHOO... keep fighting for a woman's class. But quitting does NO one any good, lets Rick win, and forces other women to accept the status quo - be set up for sure failure or quit the sport.

Don't do it. AND DON'T CRY OVER IT! You go, girl!

Leah said...

I have been seething about this all day. What a schmuck! You have a lot of support. Don't give up!

Rick Hoeting's words are unbelievable and very, very disappointing. I'm so sorry you had to endure that for sharing your valuable and valid view. I hope you're stronger from it, knowing, if nothing else, that you are way better of a cyclist and human than he has shown to be.

I commend you for bringing a voice for all of us in this situation and whether you race again or not all I can say is don't stop riding your bike for fun - its has to be fun or its not worth anything!

Judy,
"Let them hate so long as they fear." Bob Roll had that written in his helmet during his racing days,As do I.
I am writing in response to your "shitstorm"
Me I am a Utah Pro I-II road racer, there is not much else I love more then racing my bicycle.I have been racing a long time.I take my hat off to you for standing up. But I cant just sit here and read that your are going to quit."If you quit he wins" The Asshole wins! If you Love your bicycle and racing it as much as you say you do then Quiting is not an option! You will be out on your bike one day trying to find that Happy place, the place that you love so much when you are going fast and the wind is blowing through your hair,"you won't be able to find it,because you let him take it away from you."
Cycling is a very difficult sport, So you get shelled every week! keep showing up and I promise you There will be a day that you don't get shelled. Now That is worth crying about!
I will offer you this bit of advice."Don't hang out in the back of the field, get to the front half or as close to the front as possible, relax protect your front wheel, don't be intimidated because you are a woman, dont give up the wheel you are holding on to just because you are a woman."And remember everyone in the pack is Hurting just as bad as you are."
Good luck and I hope that you decide not to quit racing. You can find me on twitter "saliman"

David N. Welton said...

You should try mountain bike racing instead of road racing. It's not like there's a pack and you get dropped - you simply finish later than everyone else, but it's still a fun ride through the forest/desert/whatever and each time you get a little bit better. Also, there's always someone to race against, even if you're not racing for the win. A much more satisfying experience in my opinion.

I hesitate to even write this because it might just get twisted into something it's not but as the VP of QCW I just wanted to say the QCW board has no control over all of those emails from Rick and he is NOT a board member. He was quickly and publically chastised by the QCW president on our group for his emails. Please don't generalize his opinions to all of QCW. Ault Park is the only race we promote that doesn't have a specific women's category but not because we're cocksuckers or motherfuckers but because of logistics. Volunteers also have jobs, families and limited time so an additional women's race on a weeknight (not sure this is known to other readers) is hard to do if you have to make up work hours/family time on the weekend. We've tried to work this out but our attempts were seen as a bribe so we're stuck on the receiving end of your keyboard. We'd love to do a women's only race but need help and the best way is to stop typing and start talking/walking. I'm not suggesting that you run the women's race (otherwise how would you race?) but maybe you and your volunteers can help with the A and B races and help with setup and take down to alleviate some of the additional resource drain a women's race would produce. We're here when you want to talk.

and of note...
*none of the volunteers live in Hyde Park
*the promoter coaches his girls' soccer team

You're a strong rider and you've got a good coach so keep making deposits into the pain account and we'll see you shine even more. Don't give it up. This is supposed to be fun.

Thanks,
Tracy

...what you suggest makes perfect sense...
...don't be quickly swayed because certain other women were maybe afraid to take a stand with you...
...again, what you suggest makes perfect sense...

...it would seem this rick hoeting is a sad, pathetic & undoubtedly ineffectual human being who has some serious issues...

...anyone with the need to (over)react & display the exceedingly nasty vitriol this moron did, because you addressed a situation regarding bicycle racing, has a mental problem well beyond anything involving you...

...while tracy, the vp of the 'queen city wheels' has made assurances that rick hoeting does not speak for the club & that he has been publicly chastised through the club's presidency, i would suggest that the board of directors of that club, take to heart both hoetings action in contacting your kenda team & in the phraseology used...

...this might be best applied to hoeting himself, as regards his membership within 'qcw'...
...perhaps if hoeting assures the club that he is seeking psychological counseling for his "over the top" attacks, he could then be reconsidered for membership...

...this might be a 'shitstorm' which, for now leaves you feeling uncomfortable but judi, you ought a' be holding your head high...

I think many of you posting really have no idea of just exactly who the man, Rick Hoeting, really is. As a FEMALE rider, I'd like to share with you one of my first experiences riding with him. Rick was riding behind me as my legs were shaking and turning to rubber trying to get up my final steep hill. He shouted words of encouragement telling me I could do it. When I was ready to give up an clip out, he came right up next to me and helped push me up the hill. He was my cheerleader when I needed it. No one in that group knew what he did and I hold a lot of respect for him now. He is very passionate and may have said things that were inapproprite but it appears like many of you did just the same tasteless thing on your blog did as well. Offering words of encouragement for Judy is great but bashing a man that I'm not sure you even know just seems wrong. By the way, the fact that QCW is an all-inclusive club seems wonderful. What a great way to encourage new riders and promote the sport of cycling! To gttim: I'm not quite sure, how is that such a bad thing for QCW to encourage any riding, regardless of skill to join and learn?

gttim said...

I think many of you posting really have no idea of just exactly who the man, Rick Hoeting, really is.

He is the guy who wrote:

"Judy what you did was wrong, cowardly, self centered and unsubstantiated....."

(Perhaps he should have looked at his own actions, that were wrong, cowardly, and self centered.)

"You are a freaking moron...."

(Nice!)

"How much time did you spend in 2009 volunteering at cycling events?"

(FYI, she spent a lot. SHe just volunteered at the bike race you just wrecked at)

"Judi Rothenburg is a serious detriment to the image your team portrays. You might want to seriously consider terminating your association..."

(Those who actually know Judy, know different, as her team did.)

"I think the problem isn’t that the competition is too fast but Judi is just too slow."

(Perhaps the problem is that she doesn't want to ride with Cat 4/5's like Rick Hoeting who can't keep their bikes rubber side down.)

It is one thing to not be able to appreciate Judy's opinion, and people have different ones. To act like an immature douche emailing nasty messages, emailing a team to try to get her dropped because of her opinion, and generally acting like a immature jackass? I think we will judge Rick by his actions rather than your brief anecdote. He might just have been doing that because he wanted to get laid for all we know.

To gttim: I'm not quite sure, how is that such a bad thing for QCW to encourage any riding, regardless of skill to join and learn?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. In fact that is great. I am all for more of those teams. However, when one of those less skilled people from that team with obvious bike handling issues start making asses of themselves, insulting other cyclists, writing nasty emails, trying to get people kicked off teams and proclaiming that they are the defenders of "cycling and or tradition"..... Well, lets point out the irony. And lets point out what douche bags they are.

Rick Hoeting can push every girl in the world up a hill. After his immature temper tantrum, it isn't going to make him look good all of a sudden.

Hey Judy don't know and do not know where ya live but out in here in Southern California there is a lady named Dorthy Wong who started off racing CX in the mens a decade plus back. She is now the promoter of our Prestige Series CycloCross (the name might be wrong), has started her own women's team and is probably one of the best people I have ever met. Look her up on Facebook and talk to her about what you are going through with this A-hole. She might have some pull with UCI considering she puts sanctioned races year round.
