So these coughing fits I have during exercise - my PCP thinks I have asthma. I read up on it online and found out that adult onset asthma can come on strong during exercise. Women going through hormonal changes can get it. And there is one type that displays coughing as the only symptom! Often it comes from allergies as well. Mine seems to have gotten worse as the pollen counts get higher. I even started taking Clariton which helps a bit. The cough that started 3 weeks ago on that hill ride hasn't left. I cough often. During exercise, when laughing, even when I am just laying around doing nothing.
So my PCP wants me to have some breathing tests done, though I hesitate since I just received an $851.00 bill, from the cat scan of my kidneys in March, that my stupid fucking expensive-ass insurance didn't cover.
She prescribed an inhaler. But I can't seem to remember to take it with me.

In other fun news, besides training, Dominic and I went down to the Taste of Cincinnati last night. It's going to be a tradition since we also went last year. There is a shitload of food from local restaurants and RIDES! We rode them last year too. It's great to eat a bunch of food and then get on that ride where you stand up and the thing spins around so freaking fast and goes sideways.
Then we got on the "Dizzy Bears". You get inside, and can maneuver it to spin really fucking fast, which of course Dominic did. I was laughing so hard and we had a great time. But when we stopped, I felt like I was going to puke. And Dominic said "Honey you look green". All the color had left my face and I was so sick. But it was fun.

Tonight we are grilling out at Dominic's Mom's. The entire family is coming. Enjoy your holiday weekend, and take a moment to remember our troops overseas, and those who have died.

For my allergies, I take generic zyrtec and a benadryl at night. It's helped a lot more than anything else I've taken, including claritin. Just be forewarned that the benadryl will make waking up a pain in the ass if it's been less than 8 hours since you've taken it.
that ride looks like fun!
i hope those tights help you. being sore always makes me cranky.
Ouch! Medical bills sucks. I hope the inhaler helps.
Friggin asthma BLOWS! I got an attack on the cross race, which is the main reason I DNF'ed it. I figured it wasn't worth going to the hospital to push myself that hard. I have a Xopenex inhaler, that helps with two shots. I still couldn't breathe right after my fourth, which I'm told four is too many and could cause adverse side effects. Suck/oh well.
For me the pollen count (sucks right now) effects it only in the sense that I am so congested, even with Allegra D, that I have breathing issues anyway. I also have issues in the cold (see cross race) which I am told is due to the cold causing your lungs to have a spasm.
It just blows getting old, Judi. Just blows.
I know that feeling in your legs you are talking about and it sucks! I have compression tights. Never think of wearing them for recovery. Thanks for the info. ;)
I know that bone deep ache oh too well. Try to remember the inhaler, it will eventually work!
Glad you had fun on the rides, even though you were green!
That insurance company is fucking with you. The kidney test should TOTALLY be covered. A lot of time they deny so you'll just shuffle off into the sunset rather than fight with them. Pick a fight, they should cover that. Make them write you a letter in English with song and verse as to why they aren't covering it.
I'll say this I've had some of the best sleep of my life wearing my compression socks.
I'm a big fan of the compression stuff. I have both the socks and tights but seem to "feel" more results from the socks. I've never tried to run in them but I am starting to see people wear them during races too.
Hope you like them and good luck with the breathing & stuff.
All the best,
Ron
Hopefully the compression tights help you out!
I find that I tend to have coughing fits after working out too. I thought it was a cold weather thing but it still seems to be happening as we warm up now too. Hope the inhaler helps!
here's my two cents on the "jimmy legs" ... you need more electrolytes. steven & I SWEAR by coconut water. It's nature's gatorade & I'm pretty certain it will cure what ails ya.
...right on, zanne...while i tend to use "manufactured" electrolytic products for riding (hammer products & packets of emergenC's pour moi) simply 'cuz of the ease, i fully agree w/ your advocating the use of coconut water...
...you guys have been paying attention to mother nature...
...were you to want to strengthen it up for riding, i'd even suggest adding raw agave nectar (low glycemic index) & fresh squeezed lemon juice...
...& judi...if ya don't wanna take the time w/ the coconut thing, try two or three packets of emergenC's in a water bottle after yer workouts...
...i ain't guaranteeing it'll work for you w/ your workout schedule but i'm just sayin'...
insurance companies blow. I wouldn't pay one penny of that bill until i'd had a long drawn out fight with them. but go get the breathing tests done. interesting analysis about what causes the jimmy legs. my kid's bf gets them constantly. i'll have to tell him about coconut water!
oh and that ride looks sadistic! :)
I developed the adult onset asthma years ago when I was 20. After a few years of using the inhaler it cleared itself up as my lungs got stronger.
Keep using the inhaler and it'll get sorted over time. I've found wearing a compression base layer seems to help me while riding (not entirely sure why/how yet, but it does seem to help me breathe easier).
Keep up the excellent blog too! :oD
I've been thinking of trying some compression tights. I'm having pretty sore and achey legs when recovering. You'll have to let us know how they work.
bgw - i am going to try the coconut water. and i already take 1000mg of c a day. the emergen c's packets also have b vitamins too, which i also take.
thx!!
I have the coughing thing sometimes...frequently when it's cold. Started taking Singulair and that seems to help. It also happens after hard efforts for anywhere from a few hours to a few days. But then it goes away. I hope you get relief from it soon.
Yuck on the asthma! Hope the inhaler works!!! Keep it by your running shoes missy so you remember it!
I would have totally puked on the ride. Good for you for just turning green! :)
Let me know your thoughts on the tights. I just got some Race Sox compression socks that I'm going to wear for recovery, but I'm interested in hearing how you like the full tights. I don't think I could sleep in them though - I'd die of heat stroke! :)
Magnesium, just before bed Judi. I have the restless leg thing and this does it.
It relaxes your muscles.
-B
b - i already take it. thx.
i'm wearing my compression tights right now. my 8yr-old insists i wear shorts over them. "dad, it's like i can see all your... STUFF!"
Phew - I can finally access your blog again - believe me - I had the "Operation aborted" message way past 23rd May. Same with Betty's blog (Itchy Bits). It's annoying. It's weird that it was just your two blogs. Everybody else's seemed fine? Did you find out what caused it?
Oh, I love my 2XU compression tights but I can't sleep in them. Can't sleep when I keep them on. The Skins (another Aussie brand) are fine but the 2XU seem too strong. They work though!
Sorry to hear about the coughing. Hope it gets better soon.
Please pass this info along to all of your friends and family.

Patients at askapatient.com are reporting HFA inhalers as "useless" with a rating of 1.2 on
a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the best and 1 being the worst:

You can only wonder if the FDA is trying to kill asthmatics:
http://www.opednews.com/populum/diarypage.php?did=11627
Also worth mentioning from the FDA website is the fact that a manufacturer of one of the HFA
inhalers admits in it's own new drug application to the FDA that it's HFA based albuterol is less
safe and effective than it's CFC based albuterol:
http://www.fda.gov/cder/foi/nda/2001/20-983_Ventolin-HFA_medr_P1.pdf
These quotes taken directly from the new drug application for Ventolin HFA.
"In the multiple dose adolescent and adult studies, albuterol HFA showed a numerically smaller
improvement in FEV1 than was seen with albuterol CFC"
"There was other evidence that the HFA formulation delivers a lower/less effective dose on a per
acutation basis than the CFC product. In the single dose, dose ranging study in adults, and in
the single dose methacholine challenge study in adults one and two acutations of albuterol CFC were
statistically indistinguishable in terms of effect, whereas significant differences were seen
between one and two acutations of albuterol HFA. Finally, the combined adolescent/adult studies
showed that the HFA formulation had a longer median time to onset of effect(4.2-9.6 minutes
versus 3.6-4.2 minutes), had a shorter duration of effect(1.55-3.30 hours versus 2.29 - 3.69
hours), and was associated with more albuterol 'back up' use than the CFC formulation."
"We note that in the two 12 week clinical trials in adolescents and adults, Ventolin HFA
Inhalation Aerosol consistently showed a smaller effect size than Ventolin CFC Inhalation
Aerosol"
"Because it is expected that many physicians will prescribe Ventolin HFA Inhalation Aerosol for
patients who have previously used the CFC formulation, it would be appropriate to include some
description of the relative effectiveness of these two formulations in the product label."
"Unfavorable changes in physical examinations were observed in the ears, nose, and throat category
as follows: 8% placebo HFA; 13% albuterol HFA; and 5% albuterol CFC."
