I woke up and saw 30 degrees on the TV and grabbed my running stuff. I was dreading it but decided to just go ahead and do 4 miles with the dogs. We stepped outside and I noticed it had snowed a bit overnight, and it was raining lightly. I just decided Fuck It and kept going. It wasn't too cold and once I got warmed up, it was fine. The ice is pretty much melted too.
Mileage for the week 35.5. Yea.
I am going to try Crossfit this Sunday. I found a gym that offers classes. I want to do it for the month of March and see what happens. I am hoping it helps my training as much as they say it does. I run miles and miles, ride the trainer, lift weights, do Yoga, and I can't change the look of my body at all. I think Crossfit will do something. I just wonder if I am strong enough, it looks really hard.
And it's official. I have put on 5lbs since I started dating Dominic 6 months ago. I don't think it's muscle because a couple pairs of my jeans from last year are too tight. You know they say you always gain weight when you start a new relationship. Dominic, OTOH, has gotten a lot leaner because he's lifting at the gym now on a regular basis. Not fair.
Trying to figure out what's up with the feed on my blog. Betty says she can't see any feed after Feb 1st. I don't know what to do to fix it. If anyone has any insight, feel free to leave a comment.

Traffic warnings
I have been pulled over by the police twice in the last month. I can remember anytime I ever came close to the cops, I would practically pee my pants. I still feel like that when they pull me over, I just have to try and remember that they have nothing to arrest me for now.
I did a u turn in front of my work and I just told the cop I was tired, coming off a 12 hour shift, and he let me go. He just told me not to do it anymore.
I ran a yellow-red light on my way home from work last weekend, and I thought for sure I was getting a ticket. The cop took my driver's licence and made me wait in my car for about 25 minutes. I talked to Dominic the whole time. I was scared. I hate those flashing lights, they are bright enough to give me a heart attack! He let me go with a warning too.
I got real lucky.

Dog walk and mileage
Took the dogs to the golfcourse for a run off leash. I figured with a fresh layer of snow on the ground, I mean ice, it wouldn't be so hard to walk. And it was ok.
They saw something.

Ari was barking really loud.

I walked them about a mile while they ran off leash. Here is my pretty girl Lucy who gets a coat if it's under 40 degrees. She is always cold.
In other news, I ran 10 miles today. I ran 2 with Bruno outside and 8 in the gym. Once again it was 6 on the treadmill and 24 laps around the track for 2 miles.

Tuesday
I went for a massage this morning. My girl Sue is so good. I usually get a 30 minute swedish massage, on my legs mostly. It feels so good. And my hamstring feels much much better.
Dominic and I worked out in the gym for an hour. Shoulders, triceps, biceps, back, abs. It was a fun time. We laughed a lot. Not much else to tell, it was snowing all day again, like it has been for like 3 days. Maybe someday we'll see the ground again. And some sun.
Went back to Dominic's house and ran Bruno 3.5 miles while Dominic changed out the disposal which was broken. It snowed on us and we, once again, ran in the street. Bruno is easy to run though, he is a good boy.
Tonight I am chowing on Girl Scout cookies. Thin Mints, of course.

Monday was good
I wasn't too sore this morning after my 14 miler. That is good. My body recovers and heals fast. I attribute alot of that to my vitamins. I take a handful every morning. Fish oil, b-complex, vit e, vit c, glucosamine and msm for my muscles, magnesium, and calcium. The dogs get a bunch too. I treated my body like shit in my 20's, so I have to take good care of it now, for sure.
So I hopped on the trainer for an hour after a 3 mile walk with the dogs. I got in a good sweat session even if I had to go without music for a half hour. My MP3 must have been turned on overnight and I had no battery. Had to charge it for a half hour. So I watched The View. The dumbest show ever. I am sick of hearing about Barack and Hillary* too. Did crunches on my ball after the ride.
* I spelled their names wrong, just fixed that. LOL.
Then later this afternoon I ran with Nancy's dogs. That was a pain because we had to do it in the street and those dogs are buck wild. And they are skittish. Not real fun. Got in 4 miles. Not bad for the day. I plan to run more tomorrow and the next day. I feel like I am never going to get to ride outside though. This is ridiculous.
Ran some erronds with Dominic and got a rug for the floors. I like it, it matches the couch. I am getting the house ready to put on the market. I don't think it will sell but I want to give it a couple months and see what happens. I may have to rent it out.

14
I had 14 miles on the schedule today.
Weather conditions
It was supposed to be sunny with a high of 38 which is nice running weather. They lied. Not only was it cloudy but as soon as I headed out the door it started snowing. WTF?? Plus the ice was everywhere. I ran in the street, towards traffic, the entire run.
Nutrition
I had a protein shake and a banana and then Dominic made me a egg white and turkey bacon sandwich. I was feeling anxious about my run so I shared half with the dogs, and then Ari took it upon himself to eat the rest by himself, right off the counter. I took a water bottle full of Hammer Nutrition electrolyte powder and let me tell you, that stuff rocks better than Cliff Bloks and Sport Beans. I want this stuff all season.
The run
I had a new route and I was looking forwrd to some different scenery. This route took me down Quebec to Westwood, where lots of dope boys hang out. I only saw one syringe on the ground! Then the route takes me across a viaduct - which is a big bridge with tons of traffic. I just hate them now, after last weeks incident. With the ice and the oncoming cars, I freaked out. I just stopped. I couldn't figure out what to do. So I turned around and ran back down Beekman, towards yet another viaduct (in order to get to where I was supposed to run to, I have to go over a fucking viaduct). I ran towards traffic and most of the cars were cool and went in the other lane. One car was headed right for me. I thought he might swerve into the next lane, but he didn't, and at the last second I had to jump up onto an inch thick iced walkway. I flipped him off too. Asshole. Anyways, I finally got across and headed down Central Parkway. Still running towards traffic. I was feeling good. My legs felt good. But the snow was pissing me off. I turned down Ludlow and ran to Northside. I ran down Hamilton and up the hill. Stopped at the Comet and stretched. Called Dominic. Bitched about the conditions. That was my 7 mile turn around. Felt like 20. My run home was prety uneventful. In Northside, I saw another runner. She ran with me for a bit, she was also running The Pig this year. She was on her 1st mile while I was going on 10. I split up from her and went back towards the dreaded viaduct. I was running towards traffic, and then I freaked out again. Turned the music off. Told myself I was fine. I got really scared and went to cross the highway and ran with traffic and no music. I finally got across and headed towards Queen City. Turned onto Quebec and ran the 1.6 miles uphill to my house. And it snowed the entire time. Made it home in 2:45 which is a sucky time, but considering my conditions, better to take it slow and not hurt myself. My IT band started talking to me the last mile home so a massage is in order in the next day or so.
Afterwards
I really look forward to my long runs. I just feel kind of super human afterwards, anyone else know what I mean? Like I always feel so good, my muscles feel strong. Running long gives me the feeling of accomplishment and that feels good. I am now thinking about doing an ultra next year. There is a 50 mile trail run in Dayton in April. I'd love to try something like that.

Eye Candy
My boyfriend has a nice bottom half too. :)
This was on one of our first rides together. These people on a tandem stopped to talk to us and I took pictures to show my friend Dominic's awesome legs.

They are predicting SUN for tomorrow and a high of 38. I am excited. I don't care if it's icey or what, I am doing my 14 miles outside tomorrow. I mapped out a new run on www.mapmyrun.com which will take me from Price Hill to Northside and back. I am so sick of my other routes around Price Hill. I have been trying to figure out how to use that website for a while and I am glad I finally figured it out.
I was able to walk the dogs a couple miles this morning but we had to stay in the street. The ice is crazy and there is a ton of it. It took us almost an hour to walk 2 little miles!

Bitching and Ranting
So I am at work today. We had freezing rain last night and both Tracey and I left a half hour early. I was pretty livid that we had to come into the office and the rest of the staff worked from home. Today everyone came in except two of the girls who are both working from home, and the fucking roads are just fine! As you can see, I am pissy about it and everyone has had to hear about it today. One of the boss' is coming in tomorrow and I will be talking to her again about this situation. I need to understand why it's fair that a handful of folks get to work from home and the rest of us have to come in. It's about 50/50 now. It doesn't even matter what she says, nothing is going to make me feel better about this.
To make matters worse, I can't exercise for the next 2 days until either 1) the ice melts or 2) Dominic brings the trainer back to my house. I got up this morning and tried to take the dogs for a walk and immediatly fell on my ass as soon as we walked down the steps.
I hate winter and am ready to see some fucking sun. I feel like I am going to go crazy if this weather doesn't let up soon. I can't really remember being this depressed during the winter before. Spring hurry the fuck up.

Sweat sessions and work rant
After two days of no exercise and junk food galore, I hopped on the trainer first thing this morning. It was only 6 degrees outside so no walk for the dogs. I just fed them and got them all situated on the couch and was ready to ride. I really wanted to run but this would have to do until Dominic got up. So I rode for an hour in 15 minute intervals of 53x15 53x14 53x13 and back to 53x15. Got in a good sweat session for the most part. I woke Dominic up and we got ready to go to the gym to lift weights. I hadn't lifted this week so I did shoulders, triceps, and biceps with Dominic. It took about 45 minutes and felt good but I wanted to sweat more. So I ran for 30 minutes on the treadmill (3 miles in 26:39) and that felt good. Dominic waited for me in the steam room. He is such a sweet boyfriend.
We are having really bad weather. It snowed about 3 inches yesterday. Today the temps fell to single digits and now it's snowing again. My entire department is logged in from home and my dumb ass is in the office working while we await the biggest storm of the season. They are predicting freezing rain after it snows a couple more inches and then rain all night till tomorrow morning. I am so pissed right now. I emailed both bosses asking how it is fair that the rest of the department is working from home yet me and one other girl have to come in. Of course we could leave without pay, but I need the fucking hours! I hate liers. And I really hate bosses that lie.

The floors look awesome

Dominic had just ripped up the carpets and look at the mess.
We were hoping to salvage the floors but they were trashed.
This is the flooring. I think it looks good.
The dogs are so happy to be home. I am still finishing some clean up and Dominic is finishing the last of the hallway now. I am really happy with the floors. Now I can put this house up for sale and hope for the best.

House project
No training for me yesterday. We ripped up the carpet in my living room. We were hoping the wood floors were salvagable but they were trashed. Today Dominic is putting in the flooring. Dominic is a bartender now but used to be a master tilesetter so he knows what he is doing. I still hate having my house all disrupted and I am feeling some anxiety.
The dogs are at my friend Connie's house. Connie has 4 Dobermans and is also our hiking friend, plus she's a runner. If I have her body at age 51, I will be happy. Connie has a grooming shop next to her house and an acre fenced in for my dogs to run. I talked to her this morning to see how the dogs were doing. I have only done this one other time and I know it upsets Lucy a lot to be away from me and her home. Connie said Ari was having a great time and Lucy won't eat. I hate that.
So, I'll post pictures when it's all done. For now, I leave you with a picture of my cute boyfriend who never complains.

Mileage and Acupuncture
I did 5.5 miles with the dogs this morning. The temps dropped by almost 30 degrees from yesterday. It was cold and windy and ugly outside but we ran. We did Queen City hill which is about a mile, Ari pees on every tree. While we were running it started to snow these little ice balls. Kept hitting me in the face and the wind was too. That didn't last too long though. Finally got home and fed the dogs, got ready for mya acupuncture appointment.
I have been getting acupuncture for 2 years, on a monthly basis. I went every 2 weeks when I first started but now to maintain a level of alignment, I go monthly. I love my acupuncturist too. She's like my therapist and I tell her everything pretty much. Today I asked her to help me with my hamstring that's been so sore and tight. I laid on my stomach and she put needles in an area behind my knee. It was sore when she pushed on the area. She said that my kidney needs support. My hamstring is channeled through my kidney (chinese medicine) so if I drink more water to help support healthy kidneys, then my hamstring won't be so tight. It is very cool to me. I am a mess when I have to miss a month of needles.

Later after my appointment, I went to run Nancy's dogs. My dog's freezer was a bit low. I am not supposed to exercise after acupuncture but I was going to take it easy because Nancy's dogs are insane. I did 4 miles - 8 dogs. A mile, 2 dogs at a time. It sucks for the most part but I can't give up the money. Plus Nancy is very helpful when it comes to my queistions about homeopathy and holistic health. Tonight in addition to my dog's meat, she gave me a ton of vitamins that I use.
Oh, and my hamstring is much better.

A windy and rainy run
They said it was going to be raining all day with 30mph winds but it was warm out. I decided to go from my house to downtown and back which is 10 miles. I hate running in my neighborhood now. I have been reading all these blogs about runners in beautiful places that have the most gorgeous trails to run on. I wish I had someplace like that to run. I guess I have to go out and search some nicer places to run, but it takes time, and I don't have a lot of extra time.
So I headed out, it was drizzling. And windy. And warm. Like an idiot I wore an Under Armour base layer and I was too hot a 1/4 mile into it. I also wore Dominic's wind and rain resistant shell which keeps me dry. So I started out down Glenway ave and ran down to 8th and State which is basically a mexican ghetto. Everyone down there is fucked up on dope. So I run down that way and head over the 8th street viaduct. I was scared to death the wind was going to blow me over the ledge so I ran in the street some. I got downtown and ran to the east part of downtown, and then turned around and headed back. The wind almost knocked me off my feet twice, and the second time I was going back across the viaduct. It scared me so bad, I had to sit down. Decided to cross the steet. That was much better. I continued to run in the street and ran back past 8th and State and up Glenway hill. This hill is about 2 miles long and it's tough. I ran slowly and my hamstring started getting sore. I stopped to stretch at the top, and then ran the rest of the way home.
Took the dogs for a 2 mile walk when I got home - cool down for me.

Pissed
It is gorgeous outside today! It is perrrrrfect running weather and there is nothing I'd rather be doing than running outside today. I should have called in sick. The last few weeks it seems the weather just sucks on all my days off. I am sick sick sick of it. It put me in a shitty mood today so I ate donuts for breakfast.
I have been reading Dirt Diva's blog and she is an ultra runner. She is amazing! I cannot believe how many 100 mile races she has ran, and the thousands of miles she runs a year. Really amazing. She goes out for 40 mile training runs. I simply cannot imagine. Makes me feel like I am doing nothing! I know I am going to think about her when I am out on my little 16 mile runs hating life. Of course, she does run in some beautuful places. I bet I could run some far distances if I had the scenery she has.
I am supposed to have my V-day dinner with Dominic tonight. We couldn't do it last week because of the tooth drama. He is cooking up a meal of shrimp wrapped in bacon with risotto and cheesy garlic bread. I am looking forward to it.

An icy run
I wish the fucking ice would melt already! My 71 year old Mom fell twice yesterday walking her dog. She's ok, but it could have been really bad!
I decided to run outside with the dogs this morning before work. Stupid move! Even though it got up to the 40's yesterday and was sunny, the ice still hasn't melted all the way. It's the kind of ice that's really hard, and it's clear so you don't even see it. It took us 55 minutes to run 4.5 miles because of the shit! Some sidewalks were clear and you'd think most business' would have been clear, but noooooo....not in Price Hill! I almost went down once and yanked Ari's leash too hard. He was kind of freaked out and actually stayed at my side for most of the run, making sure I didn't fall again.
It was a sucky run. I am SO looking forward to nice weather.
Total mileage for the week 28.5.

Wednesday miles and a trip to the dentist
Dominic had to see a dentist yesterday morning. He had been complaining of serious dental pain for 3 days. He has no dental insurance either. So we had to go to this ghetto dental clinic. We had to be there by 7:30am and they called him back about 8:30am. An hour later he comes out looking really shook up. He was shaking and his face was white. They had pulled a wisdom tooth! That is major! I remember when I had mine taken out, they put me under! So anyways, they sent him home with a handful of pain pills and that's it. Not even antibiotics. He is going to have to follow up with another dentist soon.
After the tooth drama, I dropped Dominic off at his house and I went to the gym. I got in 8 more dreadful miles on the treadmill. Actually 6 on the treadmill and 24 laps around the track for 2 miles. I can't believe I have ran inside all week. The ice hasn't melted at all. I hate winter. I hate treadmills.
After my run, we lounged around and slept most of the day. Got up to eat, and that's about it.
I am back to work today and taking the day off. I hope to get in another run on Friday.

Mileage
Yesterday I ran 4 "recovery" miles at the gym. Our weather is absolutely horrible, and if I have to run any more miles inside, I am gonna rip my hair out. So I ran 3 on the treadmill and finished 12 laps around the track for a total of 4 miles. Did some weights after - focusing on BACK. Quick and easy. That was before all that dog drama from yesterday. I am still thinking about that little dog. I feel terrible about it.
Before I could even think about it, I hopped on the trainer this morning. We had a snow and ice storm and so I couldn't take the dogs anywhere. I got them fed and decided to ride. I rode for an hour, watching the Today show and Ellen and listening to my MP3. I was glad to get it over with early.
Here is a picture of the ice outside my house today. Guess I won't be riding outdoors anytime soon. Listen to me, never build a bike in the winter. It's just too frustrating not being able to ride it.

Runner's toe
My toenail is turning blue. It is going to fall off. This has happened to me the last two years. I have worn so many different kinds of shoes too. It doesn't matter which kind I try. My toenails turn blue and fall off. This one hurts.
Gross, huh?

Dog Drama!
I went to meet a friend and take the dogs for a hike. I was pulling into the park where the woods are, and this car is driving away really fast and a little Jack Russell was in the street chasing it, dragging a long line. They dumped the poor dog! Just pushed him out of the car! Poor thing was scared to death! I stopped the car and he climbed all over my car, man, that poor little dog. I am so sad about this. Anyways. I took all the dogs up towards the parking lot where there is a huge field. I was going to take him home and get him into rescue or something. Anyways, all the dogs were running around together, getting along. He was cold, he kept trying to get back in my car. Then all of the sudden, all the dogs tore off into the woods, GONE. I freaked out. I started yelling their names after a few minutes. My dogs are walked off leash every day and they NEVER go far. My friend and I walked down in the woods, we heard Ari barking. He and Lucy were chasing this dog all over the woods. Then they totally disappeared. I mean, it's been 20 minutes since they left. I am FREAKING OUT. Screaming non stop. Ari finally comes running back, and my friend, who was way over the other side of the hill, called to say he saw Lucy but she was freaked out. And by herself. She does freak out if she thinks she is going to lose me. So she finally comes running back to me, all out of breath, but the happiest I have ever seen her. The Jack never came back and Ari and Lucy were gone almost a half hour. It was terrible. Now I can't quit thinking about that JRT.

12 miles inside = torture
Got in my 12 miles yesterday but it was so windy and cold I decided to do it at the gym. To baby my hamstring I did a level II yoga class beforehand. It seems to help a lot.
I did the first 6 miles on the treadmill and finished in 55 minutes. I really don't like running on the treadmill - it is just too boring. I took a break and did 24 laps around the track inside my gym which is 2 miles. Still boring but at least I didn't have to stare at my feet in the mirror any longer. I completed those 2 miles in 20.5 minutes. Went back to the treadmill to finish the last 4 miles which I did in 39.5 minutes.
Total mileage 12. Completed in 1:55.
Been fighting with Dominic so I can't eat. I have just been drinking protein shakes.

Friday's fun
MILEAGE
I got in 5.5 miles before work with the dogs. It felt really good, even on Queen City's hill that goes on for about a mile and a half. I was glad to get in another 5 miles before the week ended. I only ran 3x's this week but I got in 2 sessions on the trainer plus a weight session. After my run I did 300 crunches on my Yoga ball.
Mileage for the week is 21.5.
GLUTTONY
There's a feeding troth in the kitchen at my work today. They had a "food day". If you have never worked in an office, you will not know what a "food day" is. Basically everyone in the office is supposed to bring something to eat. Usually the food consists of fattening dips and spreads, chips and pop, cake and cookies, and you sit and eat the crap all day long. Which is what I have been doing all day long - but hey I ran before work!
WORK UPDATE
A couple weeks ago, I posted about the 'working from home' situation. Basically a handful of my co-workers were set up to log in from home but only during the overtime hours on the weekends. I would really like to be able to log in from home too. I finally had my meeting with my boss today. The bottom line is that it's done on based on seniority except for one girl who was hired after me. She has international experience which our department really needs. I do not have any international experience. So I won't be able to log in from home for a while. I expect that they will evaluate the situation down the line, but for now, I have to come into the office. At least I don't have to dress up. I can wear my pajama's if I want.

News
So yesterday was supposed to be a day for running miles but my hamstring was just not right, even after the massage. So once again, without even thinking about it, I got on the trainer. Once I was good and warmed up, I had to jump off to rewind the Tour de France video. I stretched while my muscles were nice and warm and my hamstring felt a lot better. And I have to tell ya, I know this sounds so cheesy, but it's so fun riding the trainer while watching the Tour. The video was old, like 99 I think. They didn't even wear helmets back then. I did not know this! Anyways, it was cool. I like watching road racing and I don't do it enough. I got in a great sweat session!
My man can cook. He whipped up dinner the other night and it was yummy and healthy. We had arctic char, a mild fish, with an avocado and lemon salsa, drizzeled with lemony butter (made with Smart Start). We also had a salad and whole grain bagette. It was so good. I don't know how I got so lucky to find such a great guy that can cook too.
I want to sell my house. It's a ridiculous thought, I know. I may have to rent it out if I can find the right people. Dominic and I found a house we really want to buy. It's a long story, but we have to get it. I found someone who wants to lease my house and sub-lease it out to someone else but my Dad, the real estate guru, says bad bad bad idea. I wish someone would just come along and give me an offer.

Today
My hamstring is f-u-b-a-r. Really painful. Massage tomorrow.
Got on the trainer before I could even talk myself out of it this morning. Stayed on for an hour listening to my Mp3 and watching The Today Show. Stayed mostly in 53x17 - 53x13 - doing intervals as much as I could. It's much more doable when I don't stay in 53x13 for more than 15 minutes.
Dominic came over and we went to the gym to lift. He hurt his shoulder lifting too much weight last week so he was kind of taking it easy. We did shoulders, triceps, and biceps. Abs after.
We stopped in the thrift store after the gym and found some old Tour de' France VHS tapes. One is from 1989 and the others are Volume 1 and 2 of 1999. Dominic was very happy to get them for just a buck each. Right now he's watching them while riding his track bike 50x16 on the trainer.
Dominic is seriously bike crazy. He is always building some kind of bike for someone. Right now he's working on converting his 83' Serotta into a fixed gear. It's so ugly, brown frame, green lugs. Bright green rim and blue tires. I am going to post some pics when it's done. He is going to be lacing up his wheel when he gets off the trainer. He is so talented when it comes to bikes. After that bike, we'll be looking for my fixed gear frame. I cannot wait.

10 shitty miles
I have been doing my long run of the week on Monday. Today I had to do 10 miles. I also had to get to Nancy's to run her dogs, so I decided to just do the run in increments. The weather was good (why do I give a weather report in every blog post?) - it's 60 degrees right now and 7pm at night. It's muggy and raining off and on and has been like this all day.
We ate breakfast at Dominic's and while he cooked, I ran Bruno 2 miles. My hamstring started bothering me yesterday when I fell during my 6 miler in the morning. It was hurting a couple weeks ago too, and yoga always takes care of it. After yoga last Sunday it was fine until yesterday's fall. So I stretched some when I got back, but it was painful.
After Dominic went to work, I went to Nancy's and took her dogs out for 4 miles. I do this run just a mile at a time, and I really shouldn't even count it except as logging mileage. The dogs are so wired and hard to really run at a good pace. They are sighthounds and just have a lot of pent up energy.
My hamstring was really sore and tight after running Nancy's dogs but I went home and got my dogs and ran the remaining 4 miles.
I got my 10 miles in but lemme tell ya - they were 10 very shitty miles.

Sunday, taxes and miles for the week
Yea, got my miles in for the week. It was 30 degrees so we did about 4.5, me and the dogs. Not much more to say about that except that my total mileage for the week is 25. I think that's about 101 for the month.
Dominic gets the day off on Super Bowl Sunday so we're going to his Dad's house with his brother and his kids - Dominic's Godkids - Mason 16, Zach and Kaitlyn twins 14. Dominic loves his family so much and loves to have "family day" as much as he can. The kids are awesome, especially for teenagers. Dominic is never off on Sundays so this should be a fun day. We plan to chow and eat whatever we want. Later we'll probably go back to his brother's house to watch the game and eat more junk. I am going to run 6 in the morning before we leave so I don't feel too crappy.
I am frustrated because today is Feb 2cd and all my tax stuff isn't here yet. That pisses me off. I thought it was supposed to be delivered by Jan 31st. Ugh.

My history with bikes
I rode bikes like all the other little kids on my street. I remember not being too interested in them. I did more walking than riding. I was way into ballet since I went to a creative and performing arts high school.
Later in life, a bike was my only means of transportation. I was living in SanFrancisco and hanging out with a bunch of bike messengers. I was still pretty young, maybe 19 or so. We all had mountain bikes and we rode around the city being obnoxious. The bike messengers I hung out with were all corrupt and using drugs. I was getting deeper into my drug addiction but still maintaining an honest job. I got a job as a bike messenger. It meant I could have manic panic red hair and not have to worry about covering up my tattoos.
The first messenger job I had was paid hourly. I had a pick up and delivery scheduled on the hour and that was all I did. That job didn't pay too well, so I went on to another company that paid commission. That meant I had to haul ass all day long to make good money. Some of the guys that worked there were old time messengers who made a ton of money, but they had the nice bikes and didn't use drugs.
I came back to Cincinnati in 1996 and entered treatment. After detoxing off methadone and 4 months of intense rehab, I went into a halfway house. I had nothing. My best friend brought me her mountain bike so I could ride again. It was too small for me, but better than taking the bus.
Fast forward to last spring. I entered a triathlon after buying a used Fuji mountain bike off Craigslist for $75.00. I had no clue that I would be the only one riding a mountain bike for an Olympic distance triathlon. I started riding that bike for cross training. It was slow and heavy but I didn't know any better. Here is a picture of me right before the race started. You can see the bike tires to the left:

That was the last day I rode that bike. I bought an entry level road bike about a week later and fell in love with cycling all over. Now I have my sweet ass triathlon bike thanks to my gearhead cyclist boyfriend Dominic who I met via our bike shop.
I love bikes. Let's ride!
